BACK TO THE SHRINE

Check out Midnight Cowboy's "Referenced By" on TV Tropes!

Check out my Letterboxd list of Midnight Cowboy references in film!

I'm rating these on a scale of 1-5 to how cool I think it is. 1 Usually is reserved for "I'm walkin' here!". I think it's LAZY. Also usually reserved for children's films which is interesting?

Some of these may seem almost plagiaristic of some of the TV Tropes entries... that's because I probably wrote that one.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - 4.3

Borat wanders thru NYC as "Everybody's Talkin'" plays! 4.3. I like it. You know it is a Midnight Cowboy reference but it can always be overlooked by others.

Forrest Gump - 4.1

Forrest and Lt. Dan cut through traffic in a similar framing as Joe's cutting thru traffic early in the film. "I'm walkin' here" line. "Everybody's Talkin'" also plays. ALSO tangentially Ig there's something to be said about Joe/Rico's relationship having a parallel to Dan/Forrest (each has their period to show the other their side of the world?). I HATE FORREST GUMP LOL. I don't like it's politics and think it is just a lil bit evil but idk. I'll give this. Mmm. 4.1. I like the cutting through traffic part- its a unique reference and when paired with "Everybody's Talkin'" it's fun! "I'm walkin' here!" isn't.

The Simpsons - 5

I don't watch a lot of the Simpsons so I've only seen one reference! I actually found it while looking for a The Graduate reference in the episode. There's a montage of Bart in "Beware My Cheating Bart"- S.23 E18. The montage features a sequence of Milhouse and Bart dressed as Joe and Rico, featuring the "I'm walkin' here!" scene. ALRIGHT I'm giving this a 5!!!! It is more a reference to the scene rather than the line as "April Come She Will" is playing over it, so you have to be familiar with the film.

Seinfeld - 5

Who would have thought the episode where George buys John (sic) Voight's car would feature a reference to Midnight Cowboy? S6e8, "The Mom & Pop Store". George has lines like "Jerry, we're talking about Joe Buck.", "Just drivin' around in Jon Voight's car...". The episode ends with Kramer and Jerry on a bus, Kramer suffering from a nosebleed. Jerry puts his arm around him in reference to the final scene of Midnight Cowboy as "Everybody's Talkin'" plays. LOVE LOVE LOVE this one and I love George in it. George is so like me in this. Except I wouldn't be excited to drive Jon Voight's car. Good thing it's the wrong John!

Friday's - 3.5 (Thank you Lenny and Squiggy Archives for posting this!)

This is a niche one! Friday's was supposed to be a SNL rip-off (in Larry David's word's... it was named Friday's because it just like Saturday Night Live... but not funny). Michael Richards was also in it, if you're still reeling from the awesomeness of the Seinfeld reference. Michael McKean and David L. Lander play Lenny and Squiggy in a sitcom adaptation of Midnight Cowboy. Funny idea, but I don't like the execution. HOWEVER. I adore McKean's Joe. He's great! 3.5.
Also for my little red string board... Bob Balaban was on Friday's. Balaban played a young man that hired Joe but couldn't pay. He got the role because of nepotism.

The Muppets - 4.8.

Rizzo the Rat is named after Rico! Naming a whole character in reference / homage to Midnight Cowboy is some serious dedication!
