loud but somehow lonely

See my Midnight Cowboy shrine for more stuff about the film!

Here's a screenshot from the film The Graduate that I drew with Joe in place of Elaine, the major love interest of the film (and daughter of the notorious Mrs. Robinson). In the film, Ben (Hoffman) has been bothering Elaine to agree to marry him.

Another on the bus! I don't have a shrine for The Graduate- mostly because I don't love it, or anything. Something fascinating about it is that it ends somewhat similarly to Midnight Cowboy. Dustin Hoffman on a bus, having interuppted a wedding and dashing away with the woman he loves. And Dustin Hoffman on a bus... dead. Both end with our lead character(s) unsure of where to go next after having lost everything.

So... My file name for this is "i_dont_find_this_stuff_amusing_any_more" which is a reference to the Paul Simon song "You Can Call Me Al". I like the album it's from,Graceland, though Simon's choice to go Africa during the period in which he did was questionable, to say the least. Regardless, a lot of the album I think manages to somewhat align with Joe's story- a lot of Simon's work does, actually.

Where's my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who'll be my role model
Now that my role model is gone, gone?
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along, along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations

To me this is ... woah!! It's JOE! He's on a constant journey for somebody to clasp to. A person he can find an identity through. Jesus. Woodsy Niles. Perry. Anybody. His anxieties over the nuclear family- the idea of Joe with a nice blonde wife and two kids- consumes him at many points in the novel.

OKAY OKAY OkAY. Hear me out. I've got a funny headcanon thing about Rico's past. He was pretty young when his father died (his mother dying a few years prior, too). All of his siblings were gone, too. When the funeral came around, he'd probably be the one to set it up (I'm not too sure on funerals and burials in the 1950's and sixties, but from modern-day stuff it seems his dad did have a funeral- he wouldn't see an embalmer/mortician if he had a direct burial. Maybe it was through his work or a union.)

Whatever the scenario is, Rico's the only one left to see things get done. I imagine him in some funeral place somewhere. It's miserable. SO!! Here's a younger Rico. Mid-late teens, maybe.

I did this one mostly with a mouse + its older so I'm iffy on how it turned out. BUT!! I really like the idea. I had to scrub through the movie tons of times to reference the poster behind Joe. Not to mention scrolling through google images of Jesus to find the same one.

RICOOOOO I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!! He is literally my bbygirl. I love him so much. I love his little pinky ring so much. He doesn't sell it or pawn it at all, even when Joe sells his radio. Maybe because it isn't worth that much at all. Maybe because it's special. Rico is just. UGH!HH!! I love this nasty lil guy. Him and his ridiculous nicotine addiction. I've got three favorite Rico scenes, but the funniest one is his being at the party. It's tragic more than funny, maybe. But it's hilarious to me how much he really hates being there.
